A Challenge!

We challenge you to take four minutes and watch the movie clip that comes with the link below. Then think twice the next time you look at a plastic bottle lid, a plastic spoon, a plastic fork, straw, a disposable lighter or a plastic baggie. Please consider refusing at least ONE plastic item from your day to day activities in 2012. Plastic is forever.

Turning Trash Into Slash

Surfrider has been hard at work to get a recycling program up and running that takes Styrofoam packaging and turns it into surfboard blanks. How awesome is that? Right now this program is only available in California but it is sure to grow. Check it!  http://wastetowaves.org/

Are you a Photographer looking for a Project?

California King Tides has put out a Call for Photographers. In part it reads:

The California King Tides Initiative is looking for Photographers to participate in documenting the effects of “King Tides”. “King tides” is an extreme high tide event that occurs when the sun and moon’s gravitational forces reinforce one another. King tides tend to be more dramatic in the winter when storms cause increased wind and wave activity along the coast. These high water events allow us to visualize now how flooding from rising sea levels will impact our beaches, coastal areas and shoreline communities in the future.

(an example of King Tide erosion in Australia)

How can you participate?

1. Mark your calendars for January 20 -22, and February 7 – 9. This is when king tides are expected to occur.

2. Go to http://californiakingtides.org/when/ and view the tide schedule and find out when the highest tides will occur in your area. Take images of areas that are known to flood and erode and/or areas where the high water levels can be gauged against sea walls, jetties, bridge supports, dikes, buildings or other coastal infrastructure around the state. If possible, take comparison photos the same area at low tide or during a normal high tide. Remember to be safe! High tides can cause hazardous waves and flooding so please keep your distance from the shoreline as you snap your photos.

3. Questions?:  Email CaKingTides@gmail.com or check them out at http://californiakingtides.org/
